Youth Missions Trip with Merge Ministries to Chickasaw, AL
Dates: June 15 - 22, 2019
Location: Chickasaw, AL
We had a great week in Chickasaw, AL June 15 - 22. It was a very long drive from Fairfield to Chickasaw. We worked with Word of Life Community Church in Chickasaw, AL. Our youth had the opportunity to attend a very different worship service than what they are used to. Our students learned what corporate prayer can look like, as well as a healing service. On Monday, we started working with Brother Mack on some things around the church that he needed much help with. Brother Mack is the facilities person at WOLCC. We did a number of projects with and for him. We helped move super heavy equipment that would have taken him days/weeks to move. We helped to replace ceiling tiles and sweep/mop the gymnasium floor. We also helped with other various projects to include "landscaping". Our kids worked hard every day and learned just how blessed they truly are. In the evenings, we helped with their VBS. Each of our students helped in a different age group or area. At the end of the night, when brown bag dinners were served, we had the opportunity to make new friends as we ate together.
We also got to learn a lot of history of Chickasaw and the surrounding area. We went to Africatown, where the last known slave ship, the Clotilde, came. We learned that some of the members of WOLCC were direct descendants of the Africans who came to America on the Clotilde. Brother Ross, who gave us a tour of Africatown, also gave us a tour of downtown Mobile. While we were at the Mobile Museum of History, we learned about a journalist named Mel Showers, one of the first African American television journalists, who retired after 50 years of being on the air.
For a breather morning on Wednesday, we took a tour of the Battleship - the USS Alabama. While the kids didn't think this would be neat, they ended up really enjoying their time at the battleship. We were also told to rest on Sunday afternoon and Friday evening, so we had the opportunity on those days to head to Gulf Shores for some downtime at the beach.
Our kids had a great time and learned a lot through their week in Chickasaw. Friendships were made, as was an impact. This is a very brief summary of what happened through the week, as it's hard to put some things into words. Thank you for your prayers and support.
